Purrrr Memorial Day started out in 1868 as Decoration Day, a day to decorate the graves of Civil War dead. There is some confusion as the meaning of Memorial Day. Some folks want to celebrate all soldiers, but dat not at all what it is. Some folks think it da opening of summer, or a nice time for a picnic.

Memorial Day is a time to remember fallen comrades. I like to tink it a day to eat and drink and listen to music for my OTRB friends, cuz dey can't any more.

Purrrr Dis my playlist. It a little darker dan da picnic and pawty music, but I tink it makes da point. I hope you enjoy!

Transmission of FIV

Transmission of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) among cohabiting cats in two cat rescue shelters.
Conflicting accounts have been published in the veterinary literature regarding transmission of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) between cohabiting cats in mixed households, and the mechanics of possible casual transmission, if it occurs, are poorly understood. Similarly, there are conflicting reports of vertical transmission of FIV.

I don't know what to make of this. The rescue sites are all linking to each other and crowing that FIV is not transmissible to cats living in the same household as long as there are no bites. This would be wonderful, but it has not been proven.

It has NOT been proven.

The article reports that 138 cats in one rescue did not catch FIV from an FIV+ cat It says that 19 kittens born of FIV+ queens didn't catch it through the placenta or by nursing. This is too small of a sample to be statistically significant.

Try it again with 1000 cats.

Hyperthyroid Epidemic in Cats

Some ignorant little twit just called da lady "cruel" for letting da kittehs hang out in the garden.

She said cats must not be allowed outside. Her reasons included cars and psychopathic children.

Sisfurcat Chili lived to 17 and Bugs to 16. They were both indoor outdoor. Da lady had a few guidelines to keep us as safe as possible from raccoons and cars. Indoors at night and during rush hour, or if da humans is away from da house.

Inside the house is not a magical safe place. Chili and Bugs both had hyperthyroid. It seems there is an epidemic among indoor cats.

Pets and Second-Hand Smoke

American Veterinary Medical Association: Stop Smoking – For Your Health and Your Pets’ Health

We have been hearing for years about the dangers of second-hand tobacco smoke. The American Lung Association says in Secondhand Smoke and Asthma that children of smokers are more likely to have asthma, ear infections and bronchitis.

Many smokers tink dey keepin dey chillrun safe by stepping outside to smoke. Sorry, silly monkeys, you brings da smoke in on your clothes and spread it throughout da house.

What we hazznt heard until recently is the effect of second-hand smoke on PETS! According to the American Veterinary Medical Association: Stop Smoking – For Your Health and Your Pets’ Health, second-hand smoke has terrible effects on pets' health.

For instance, dogs wif long snouts gets cancer of da nasal cavities while dogs wif short snouts gets lung cancer.

Cats has da same problems as dogs, of course. Dut dey another factor. We cleans ourselves so we swallows toxins too. According to Environmental Tobacco Smoke and Risk of Malignant Lymphoma in Pet Cats, cats in smoking households two to three times as likely to get malignant lymphoma.

Da lady's mama had lymphoma. She begged da lady to makes dem stop torturing her. Cats can't ask for a DNR. For several weeks you has strangers sticks your sweet kitteh wif needles and infuse dem wif dangerous chemicals dat may only extend life for 4 months to a year. Da kitteh not even know why dis happening! *cries*

Please, if you smoke just STOP. Your pets will likely be healthier and live longer.
